Farmer Marina Brown O’Connell and her psychotherapist husband Mark O’Connell brought their livelihoods together to create a farm that not only helps regenerate the land, but regenerates lives too. Having adopted their children and brought them up on their farm, the pair saw first-hand how beneficial being in nature can be, and how the simple act of digging your hands into the soil can help you feel connected.

Having adopted their children and brought them up on their farm, the pair saw first-hand how beneficial being in nature can be, and how the simple act of digging your hands into the soil can help you feel connected.

They’ve recently opened the farm up to asylum seekers, offering a space to farm the land, pick vegetables and cook together, creating a community and helping overcome trauma. They’ve also started training the next generation of regenerative farmers, as a means to pass on the land and skills they’ve accumulated over the years.

The annual Emerging Farmers Conference (formerly the Immigrant & Minority Farmers Conference) serves to advance the success and sustainability of farmers who traditionally face barriers to the education and resources necessary to build profitable agricultural businesses, including immigrant farmers and farmers of color.

This innovative conference focuses primarily on the needs and interests of these farmers, and supports their contributions to local economic development and building healthy communities. It does so by connecting farmers, farm advocates, educators, professionals, experts, and agency officials.

The Emerging Farmers Conference (EFC) is FREE for all farmers and language interpretation is available in Spanish, Hmong, Karen, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and Somali. Interpretation is based on registration. (We do our best to accommodate all farmers, but cannot guarantee interpretation for last-minute registrations.)

The EFC is a program of Big River Farms. It is planned and hosted by a collaborative of farmers and volunteers, government, nonprofit, and University of Minnesota personnel.

Interested in nature friendly farming, land management, and restoration?

Interested in connecting more deeply to your natural environment?

Join us for a day engaging with and participating in an upland, organic farm in the Lake District. Nature is at the centre of our farming practice, combining new and traditional methods that support and restore biodiversity. Our land includes field pasture, hay meadows, ancient oak woodland, and upland fell. We stock a small number of sheep, native longhorn cattle, poultry, bees, and Tamworth pigs.

During the day, there will be a tour of the farm, a woodland ecology workshop and a traditional skill session e.g. dry stone walling. We are beginning a woodland project to restore traditional and ecological practices to allow sustainable and resilient land management. By incorporating the woodland as a productive part of the farm, we will increase the diversity of incomes and steward a sustainable mosaic of habitats. We value participation in land practices to create a better understanding of farming sustainably, whilst highlighting the benefits of connecting with nature for our wellbeing and, in turn, nature’s wellbeing.

These events are open to everybody, above the age of 18 (16+ with a responsible adult), however please consider this is a working farm (with uneven surfaces and some walking) so a level of phyiscal fitness is required. If you feel you have additional needs please get in touch and we will try to accomodate you. Please no dogs (except guide dogs).

Travel:

Parking is very limited at the farm. We ask that you try to arrive by bus and we will meet you at Monk Coniston bus stop, down the hill from the farm. There is a (paid) car park called Monk Coniston next to the lake which is a 5 minute walk from the meeting point. We encourage arriving by bike – you have the incentive of extra cake! Specific details and more accurate location are shared in your confirmation email.

If you can no longer attend, please let us know so we can offer your space to someone else.

Any questions, please get in touch at hollinbankfarm@gmail.com

Funding for this event has been provided by the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme from DEFRA. FiPL gives funding to projects that work to restore nature and mitigate climate change, provide opportunities for people to discover the landscape, and support sustainable farm businesses.

This ground-breaking hybrid conference will examine how we can successfully integrate trees into the farmed landscape and build mutually beneficial relationships between the farming and forestry sectors at this time of transition.

Across the UK and the world, both farming and forestry are vital to climate, nature, people and the economy. We aim to increase shared awareness of the challenges and opportunities increased collaboration can bring, understand the cultural and financial barriers to integrating trees on farms, and explore the multiple benefits, both economic and environmental, for farmers, foresters and policymakers.

We have a fantastic programme featuring speakers from across the UK and Europe. Taking place over two days, the conference will offer practical proposals and case studies of what has already been achieved, and by doing so change our perspective on what is possible so we can meet the needs of land-based businesses and respond to the environmental crisis and food crisis together.

Gathering in person for the first time since January 2020, the great and the good of agroecology turned their attention to the pressing matters of the day: the intersectional crises of biodiversity, climate, energy and cost of living. The movement discussed available support for small-scale farmers, and solutions provided by transformed food and farming systems.

This year’s Oxford Real Farming Conference (ORFC) felt more necessary than ever.

The event – and the movement – continues to grow, this time combining a virtual programme and in-person event. Online speakers represented six continents, whilst hundreds gathered in Oxford to discuss transforming food and farming systems for good.

The following takeaways represent common threads from the expansive programme which, each year, provides so much more in terms of connection, solidarity and mobilisation than any single lesson learnt.

1.Positivity nurtures hope and seeds change – Good things are happening “below ground”, but the movement needs better storytellers.

We know that most small-scale farmers would like to lower their input costs and increase their crop yields. In this course week, we help farmers understand the value of integrating livestock into their cropping plans. Farmers have used the impact of animals to double crop yields and significantly reduce input costs (when compared to community control fields). The farmers also learn how to plan and manage where livestock are herded in both the growing and non-growing seasons, so that animals remain healthy, safe, and productive, even as they work to heal the land.
